Module 7 Reflection

Last week, I was able to get my work done early for the aforementioned reasons of performing in Washington, D.C. this past weekend. This week, I got a slightly late start for the very same reason. On a side note, the performances went well, but we did not return home until about 2:30am Tuesday morning.

This week's topic was musical assessment and professional productivity. Several of the assessment tools introduced in this week's readings I had already learned about thanks to the Assessment course, however, what was new for me this week was learning about the various technological tools to assist in assessment. Google Forms, which we had an assignment on, was one of those tools and is something that I am considering using going forward, especially as I begin to teach more classes that will need some kind of quiz, and Google Forms provides a great tool to use for creating quizzes. I am also considering using this as a tool for collecting assessment evidence for my capstone that I will be starting here soon.

The other projects we had this week dealt with the professional productivity side of this week's topic. We had three mini-projects. In the first, we designed a newsletter in Google Docs. In the second, we designed a Google Slides presentation. Finally, we designed a calendar with Google Calendar. For the newsletter, due to time, I used the materials presented to us for a fictitious high school that I named Western High School. This has given me ideas for doing some kind of newsletter for our music department here to keep students in the department and around campus, as well as the faculty and the greater community in the know of what is going on with our department. For Google Slides, it was not much different from working with PowerPoint, but it being online and in the cloud does make it a great resource to utilize when designing presentations (for both myself and students). For the calendar, I generally do not use calendars, but going forward, this is something that I will probably start using more often, especially as I become busier.

Having previously worked with Dropbox, I like Google Drive a lot more. It has been a few years since I last used Dropbox, but from what I can remember, Google Drive has more space (available for free), and there is the added bonus of all of the different tools that you can utilize (such as Forms or Slides). Dropbox is simple as you take a file, drop it in, and it is saved to the cloud and can be accessed from another computer, but it does not have as much space available for free (unless they have updated it since the last time I used it).
